Breaking down boundaries: Sinfonia Smith Square orchestrates a bright future

At the heart of EFG’s long-standing partnership with Sinfonia Smith Square, lies a shared belief in the importance of nurturing and investing in the next generation of talent. Each year, Sinfonia Smith Square’s Fellowship programme brings together some of the brightest young musicians from the UK and around the world, and equips them with the skills they need to thrive in the professional world.

Of all the genres, classical music really needs brilliant young advocates to convey its power and continued relevance in today’s world. Sinfonia Smith Square are committed to creating an orchestra that reflects the diversity of the society we live in and it’s their ambition to help more young musicians from a variety of backgrounds transform their lives through music.

One of the ways they achieve this is by commissioning new music from female composers and ensuring balanced representation on the podium. Recently, BBC presenter Jumoké Fashola caught up with Rosie Fraser, Chief Executive of Sinfonia Smith Square and Charlotte Corderoy, Orchestral Conductor, who was recently shortlisted for ‘Young Artists of the Year’ at the 2025 Royal Philharmonic Society Awards. They discussed the future of women in classical music and the importance of inclusivity within the industry.

Rosie Fraser added: “EFG’s unwavering commitment to our musicians has helped launch the careers of hundreds of young musicians, and with EFG by our side, the orchestra has developed its own distinct character and reputation as a performing ensemble with a remarkable track record in innovation”.

As the baton passes from one generation to the next, the future indeed looks bright.
