Alexander Bublik was in outstanding form throughout the week, producing some of the best tennis of his career and outperforming a talented field of rising stars en route to the final. In spite of a shaky start, he regained his composure to take the opening set, before Cerandulo responded and claimed the second set, forcing a decider. Pushed to the limit in the third and final set, Bublik dug deep to seal victory and lift the Gstaad trophy, cementing his credentials on all surfaces.
Home pride was also on display, as Jerome Kym reached the quarter-finals for the first time in his career and the Swiss pairing of Jakub Paul and Dominic Stricker reached the semi-final of the men’s doubles. In the final, Portugal’s Francisco Cabral and Austria’s Lucas Miedler staged an exciting comeback to defeat Germany’s Hendrik Jebens and France’s Albano Olivetti, 6-7, 7-6, 10-3.
Giorgio Pradelli, CEO and Alex Classen, Chair, from EFG International, presented the champion’s trophy to Alexander Bublik and he took the opportunity to pay tribute to his opponent: “This is my sixth title and I have played the greats of the game, but this final I will remember as one of the toughest I have ever played”.
Gstaad’s charm lies in its unique setting and rich traditions and reflecting on his first trip to the region, Bublik said: “It was real pleasure to come here. I can’t wait to come back next year. The beautiful Alps. It’s an amazing spot.”
This year marked the 110th anniversary of the tournament and it was another memorable chapter in its history. You can watch all the highlights in the official tournament wrap-up movie here.
