Team Malizia sets sail in The Ocean Race Europe: Follow the journey

On Sunday, 10 August, the second edition of The Ocean Race Europe sets sail from Kiel, Germany. This high-stakes, multi-stage event features some of the world’s top offshore sailors racing high-performance IMOCA class yachts. Seven international teams will navigate a demanding 4,500 nautical mile course over five legs, with the race culminating in Boka Bay, Montenegro, on 20 September 2025.

Charting the course

After departing Kiel on Sunday, the opening leg takes the fleet through the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, and the English Channel before arriving in Portsmouth, UK. From there, leg two ventures into the Atlantic heading towards Cartagena, Spain via a fly-by in Matosinhos/Porto in Portugal. The third leg passes along the Mediterranean to Nice, France, and continues onwards to Genova, Italy. The fifth and final leg takes the race into the Adriatic for the grand finale in Boka Bay, Montenegro.

Meet Team Malizia

Team Malizia is making their debut in The Ocean Race Europe and have assembled a talented, diverse and highly experienced international crew to take on the race. Skipper Boris Herrmann (GER) is joined by co-skippers Will Harris (GBR), Cole Brauer (USA), Francesca Clapcich (ITA/USA), Justine Mettraux (SUI) and Loïs Berrehar (FRA). Onboard reporter Flore Hartout (FRA/NED) will be capturing all the race action and ‘behind the scenes’ moments from her unique vantage point. Get to know the Team Malizia crew further here.

How the race is won

The Ocean Race Europe promises to be an intensely competitive and compelling contest. Points are scored in multiple ways: at the end of each offshore leg and at the five designated scoring gates located early on into the legs. The final stopover in Boka Bay will also feature a short inshore coastal race on September 20, and the resulting points awarded will be equivalent to an offshore leg.

Each team’s overall score will be the sum of points accumulated across all the legs, including any bonus points awarded from the scoring gates, minus any penalty points. The team with the highest total score will lift The Ocean Race Europe trophy.

Follow all the race action on Team Malizia’s digital and social media channels

Daily race updates and exclusive content will be shared on all Team Malizia and Boris Herrmann’s social media channels including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. Race highlights will be shared on the Team Malizia website.

The Ocean Race Europe will also share content from all the participating teams on all their website and social media channels.

Broadcast coverage

The Ocean Race Europe has partnered with Warner Bros Discovery who will provide live coverage of the dock-out and race start in Kiel on 10 August, as well as the final inshore coastal race in Boka Bay on 20 September.

Throughout the race, Warner Bros Discovery will also produce 14 preview and highlights shows, airing every Tuesday and Friday. All programmes will be broadcast on Eurosport across Europe, on TNT Sports in the UK, and streamed via HBO Max (across Europe) and Discovery+ (UK, Germany and Italy).

Malizians  Season 2 – European Waters

Team Malizia will capture daily life on board as they race around Europe in seven episodes of ‘Malizians – Season 2’. The series will be released on Team Malizia’s Youtube channel during each stopover, beginning Saturday 09 August.

A mission beyond racing

Team Malizia’s mission ‘A Race We Must Win’ carries a powerful double meaning. They are not only competing for victory in The Ocean Race Europe but uniting on a bigger scale to win the race against climate change and global warming.

Their boat, Malizia – Seaexplorer will collect valuable ocean data throughout the race, whilst the team will use the stopovers and their communications platforms to raise awareness about the importance of ocean protection and climate action. Through ‘My Ocean Challenge’ events in Kiel, Portsmouth and Genova, Team Malizia aims to inspire and educate the next generation with their sailing adventures, which includes the children sharing their own ‘Wishes for the Ocean’ through drawings and messages.

We are proud to support Team Malizia on this exciting challenge and wish them fair winds and the very best of luck for the journey ahead. Bon voyage!
